Disability: A Condition, Not a Definition

By Angela Hunter
NENA Director

As Employment Networks, our role is to support individuals receiving SSI and SSDI as they work toward employment that honors their abilities—not their limitations. Living with a disability often creates a nonstop cycle of appointments, tests, medications, and uncertainty. It can feel like a never-ending loop, making everyday tasks more difficult than they once were.

That’s why the questions we ask matter. We explore goals, work history, accommodations, transportation, benefits, and—most importantly—what each participant wants their future to look like. These conversations open the door to trust, clarity, and long-term partnerships.

No single EN has every answer, but together we share resources, tools, and solutions that help participants navigate both work and life. As we complete our SSA-222s and APOR reports for 2026, it’s a good time to remember our WHY?

“Why”-Definition: (adverb) a versatile word used to ask for a reason, cause, or purpose.

As we support individuals through challenges, above circumstances toward future employment. Together we HELP, we Encourage, we build Relationships!

As EN’s we are adverbs defining action with reason, cause and purpose.

Every person we serve is as unique as their fingerprints.

Disability does not define them.

Beyond conditions, we help individuals redefine themselves.

One participant at a time.

Important: Complete your APOR

It’s the beginning of a new year and time to complete the mandatory Employment Network (EN) Annual Performance Outcome Report (APOR). The deadline for completing the APOR is February 23, 2026.

Be sure to use the link that was sent to your EN’s Signatory Authority in the email message titled, “2026 Annual Performance Outcome Report (APOR) Survey,” sent today, from enapor@ssa.gov via Survey Monkey.

Failure to complete the APOR by the deadline is a violation of your EN’s Ticket Program Agreement (TPA) and could result in Social Security limiting your EN’s ability to assign Tickets, receive payments, or in termination of your Agreement.

Please visit APOR Frequently Asked Questions for more information on how to complete the APOR. If you have any additional questions, please send an email message to enapor@ssa.gov with the subject line, “APOR Assistance.” Please include your PID number on the subject line.
